CIMA pays tribute to Past Secretary Vice Admiral Sir George Vallings KCB
The President and Council of CIMA have been paying tribute to Vice Admiral Sir George Vallings KCB, Secretary of the Institute from 1987-95, who died in his sleep on Christmas Day after a long illness.
Upon hearing the sad news, CIMA President, Gordon Grant said:
“Sir George was one of the rocks upon which the institute has been built. He was held in the highest regard by his many colleagues at CIMA.”
Charles Tilley, Chief Executive, CIMA echoed these feelings:
“It is a great accolade to Sir George that over the 12 years since he retired from CIMA, he was still referred to with great warmth and respect by both staff and members of Council. This clearly indicates the huge success he had in leading CIMA during his time as Secretary.”
His management style helped lay the foundations of the successful institute CIMA is today.
Members and staff have variously described him as “a name instantly recognized with affection and respect” and “such a genuine man and a great chum”.
A memorial service will be held later in the year. Sir George was 75.
