Association of Taxation Technicians

The Association of Taxation Technicians was established on 30 August 1989 under the sponsorship of the Institute of Taxation (now the Chartered Institute of Taxation). Its creation recognised the increasing demand for tax services and the development of tax practice as a professional activity in its own right. Tax practice includes tax compliance work, namely the preparation of the tax returns that corporate and individual taxpayers must file. The primary objective of the Association is to provide an appropriate qualification for individuals who undertake such work. Those who meet the membership requirements have their qualification recognised by use of the title of “Taxation Technician” and the designatory letters ATT.

Members, who are employed in professional practices, industry, commerce and the public sector, were first admitted in January 1990. The Association now has over 9,000 members, affiliates and registered students. Candidates for membership must satisfy the Association’s examination requirements, which cover business and personal taxation together with accountancy and law, and have had a period of practical experience.

An increasing number of members are using their ATT qualification to practice in their own right and to provide taxation compliance services directly to the public. The Association operates a registration scheme for such members under which they must meet certain requirements. These include having appropriate professional indemnity insurance and undertaking continuing professional development to keep their knowledge up to date. Those who meet the registration requirements may state on their business stationery that they are “Registered with the Association of Taxation Technicians as a Member in Practice” and exhibit the Association’s badge.

Tax Technicians typically give advice on current business and personal transactions and keep clients up to date on tax matters. Tax Technicians generally spend significant time focussed on assisting clients with compliance matters, ie completing tax reporting requirements such as tax returns which have to be submitted to the Inland Revenue.

You can study for your ATT qualification after success at GCSE level or equivalent.
