Can you work out a divisions cost of sales.....

Postby mrbean » Mon May 27, 2013 5:05 am

..from an annual report ?

ie, taking Mothercare's annual report - can you work out how much of its International divisions growth in profits each year have come from any cost cutting on any given report ? Obviously MTC group gross margins have been declining whilst its revenue has gone up over four years and admin costs have gone down over the last 3 years. So UK stores have been closing whilst the international division has been expanding.

Mothercare has manufacturing hubs in India and Bangladesh and they source alot from there for their international franchises. I'm thinking though that cost of sales etc is all lumped into the group as a whole rather than divided between the UK and international ???

All i can seem to find for this is revenue and underlying profit.

Mothercare's International division underlying profit margin,sales,profit ;

2013 16.8% , 249 42
2012 14% ,252 35
2011 13% ,206 27.5
2010 13% , 176 23.2
2009 9.7% ,144 14
2008 8.1% ,116 9.4

International growth (not to the decimal point);

Underlying profit growth %, LFL , Total International Sales , New Store Openings ;

2007 35%, 12%, 30%, 62
2008 20%, 12%, 42%, 77
2009 48%, 6% , 41%, 115
2010 40%, , 21%, 119
2011 19%, , 16%, 166
2012 27%, 6% , 18%,
2013 20%, 5.6%,8.4%,115

Vs, UK Sales growth, Underlying Profit Millions , LFL Sales

2007 1%...-o.8m..1.6%
2008 1.6%..7.8m,.2.9%
2009-1.4%..-2.4m..1.4%
2010 2%.....11m...3%
2011 0.5%%..11.1m..-4%
2012-4.6%..-24.7m..-6.2%
2013-10.8%...-21.7m..-3.6%

But i have no accountancy training but maybe theres away to get this from the cash flow or balance sheet or notes ???
Basically asking about how can i gauge the quality of their international earnings.

Thanks for any help ! I'm dumb but keen !
