The best places for second hand CTA materials that I know of are E-bay and the CIOT’s students forum on their website.

When buying second hand please make sure they are up to date for your exams. The law book published by CIOT (essential) is currently on the 6th edition with a new edition examinable from next March. For the November written exams the material should be based on FA09, for next May FA10 (this will only just be being published so be wary of anyone claiming to be selling it second hand).

There are two publishers of materials, Tolleys tax training and TQT - TQT material is used by both BPP & Kaplan. I’ve used both as part of taught courses and prefer Tolley’s because if you buy from them, even on a home study course basis, you also have access to the texts and additional learning materials (including mp3 lectures) online.

That’s a pain, it used to be mainly stuff for sale. I see there’s some on e-bay just now, a mix of FA09 and old syllabus material (paper I, II, etc) - the old syllabus is set up quite differently to the new syllabus.

The e-assessments are on very dry material, but I found using common sense went a long way when I couldn’t answer a question. How you find them also depends on your background. For example have you been involved in drafting engagement letters, completed money laundering and/or data protection training? All of these will mean some of the material is quite familiar, so this will help. But if you haven’t, don’t worry, you just need to put a bit more work in.

The exams are a mix of multiple choice and multiple answer eg two answers from four options. Being mthodical and making your own notes I found very useful.
