Hi,

Does anyone on this forum have the same thoughts as me?

I am about to give up on accounting studies and trying to get an accounting job. The reason is that I cannot land an accounting job, despite searching, applying and writing to accountancy firms for many years. I have tried to change my approach several times but the result has always been the same. I don’t know whether this is what other people find, but I find the availability of accountancy jobs in the UK very far and thin. Of course, my interviewing technique is far from perfect, but I know that I could do the job.

Of course, if I am to give up on pursuing such a job, there is no point continuing to study and take the exams.

I am thinking of teaching Mathematics at secondary school level. Perhaps that would be a better way to focus my energy. After all, I was an Economics student once and achieving full employment depends on the flexibility of the labour force. Since accountancy has very low demand and is over-supplied; and teaching (especially Maths and the Sciences) is very under-supplied, perhaps this is where to focus.

Aligning one’s desires and expectations to fit the macro-economy is hard but hey, perhaps I will fully come round to it.

I am the same, im bored of accountancy its boring as hell, heres no money at the bottom, no matter how much hard work you put it, you dont get the rerwards like in sales

im stuck at accoutna assistant level, im moving into estate agency, its not the best profession but at least it gives me comission and an edge that i have lost doing what is essentially admin, accountacy seem smore like admin the only difference is you play with more numbers than words !

I am really tired of looking for such roles. I have run out of steam. No one will employ me to do accounting. So I have to do something else.

where do you live? accountancy jobs seem to be in abundance, i started looking 2 weeks ago, have been put forward for about 4 jobs, turned one down, had one interview and am waiting on the others. Is it your interview technique thats failing?

ive been there with the giving up idea, left once to do sales, hated it, so degrading, no use of ability and ultimately no where to go. You can either sell, or be a sales manager

Started to train to be a personal trainer, but that was before the recession hit, gave that idea up more as a saferty thing

i think with Accountancy, it helps to be in the right environment, decide what suits you and aim for it, you must have chosen this career for a reason, dont give up on it just because things arent right at the moment, its probably one of the most rewarding and diverse careers you can obtain, especially when qualified

Thanks Carl28.

I live in West London (Ealing). I have the opposite experience to you. I can’t find any jobs; I mean there are loads posted on the internet and agency websites but after I apply, I never hear anything back.

Would it be possible to give me some job searching tips?

Thanks, especially for giving me a little bit more hope.

no prob mate, i would imagine theres a lot of competition in London

First thing, get signed up with agencies, theyre a pain, but they also do the work for you. Get your CV on monster website and reed, make sure it can be searched for and they will come to you (hopefully)

Where you at with studies? whats your CV like experience wise?

Don’t give up! Tell yourself that “they need you” & make sure you give that impression. Get knocking on some doors with your galdrags on, a smile on your face, CV in a nice envelope and an air of superiority & control (just fake it & play the Diva)
I tried it & it works. Best of luck.

No, I don’t have first hand experience in working specifically in accounts. I know that that is a problem. But I have worked in reconciliations and control in banking.

I have made up my mind. I am going to go and do something else. If it is not meant to be, it is not meant to be. Several years trying to get a job and no success must tell me that it is not meant to be.

I am going to try my hand at teaching Maths.

Good luck to everyone on this forum with your studies/careers in accountancy.
