Hope all of you are fine and enjoying Sunday afternoon.

I have just joined the website a few minutes ago, I find it very useful and the topics seem to be interesting. I think nowdays it is good to share opinions, ideas and try to help each other if we can.

I am originally from Hungary, from where I have a chartered accountant qualification. I asked NARIC and they told me that this qualification is the equivalent of a Higher National Diploma. Sounds like to me as it is between A levels and University…

Now living here in the UK for more than 4 years, I decided it was time to start my accountancy career. I always wanted to do it, but I feel ready for it now coming from a foreign country.

It does not prove to be an easy thing. I do not have a degree, so some of the companies would not value me as they only want graduates.

Preferably I want to get a job with a big company where they give me the training / support.

Is anyone here in the same or in a similar situaton? It would be nice if we could discuss some things.
Cheers xxx

Welcome to the forums FairyDust.

Don’t just think about big companies as small companies often offer study support too!

Good luck in your quest

Welcome aboard.  Sorry about the windups in the Horse Riding thread.  We all have our hobbies.

HND is roughly equal to the first two years of a university course.  It’s not quite that clear-cut, but it’s approximately the case.  Isn’t NARIC primarily for the purposes of immigration though?  So “equivalent” is a bit like saying apples are equivalent to oranges.

Perhaps the National Qualifications Framework would be of interest:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Qualifications_Framework

U r saying ‘u heard CA equavalent to HND?’

It’s entirely possible.  I do know that NARIC put CIMA at level 7: the same as Masters degrees (and the scale only goes up to 8).  ICAEW and ICAS would probably be level 7 qualifications too.  HND is at 5, between A-levels (4) and bachelors degrees (5).  I don’t know why the Hungarian equivalent is rated as lower-level.  Have you got any information (in English) we could have a look at.

I would suggest the AAT probably belongs around level 5 too. This is pure speculation, because I don’t know anything about your qualification, but I’d suggest this is the level you should be looking at: AAT-qualified/graduate trainee.  There are trainee programmes out there, and maybe some of them would be interested.

What languages do you speak?  I’ve had to turn down a number of interesting jobs because I can only speak English and the company wants multiple languages (especially German).  As BlueWednesday alludes to, you might find smaller ‘niche’ companies would be interested in your background if you aren’t a conventional A-level/graduate entrant.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions smile I will also see what I get out of that link, JP smile

I got my original documents translated to English, and it says my certificate proves the qualifications of a Chartered Accountant for Enterprises. When I showed it to people here, they did not really know what to do with it.
I contacted NARIC - even Open University advised them; NARIC came back with the following after reviewing my qualification:

“considered comparable to a standard between BTEC National Diploma and BTEC / SQA Higher National Diploma….
... when considering the qualifications framework in the UK in broad terms, I can confirm that a standard between BTEC National Diploma and BTEC Higher National Diploma (HNB) falls between N/SVQ levels 3 and 4…”

When reading this I was a bit disappointed.. I studied for this for 3 years thinking it is a good qualification.

I am wanting to get a job where I can do further studies - ACCA or ICAEW… - to fully qualify for UK standards.

On top of Hungarian and English I used to speak German, but as I am not using it, I mostly forgot everything. I am planning to bring it back, as it would just help me to get on and start something. Was thinking about French, but now everyone speaks French, so it is kind of normal, isn’t it? What I find when I am browsing job adverts, that companies do not really reward it you are speaking foreign languages. The pay is very low and they want you to be fluent in 3 languages… But of course there are good ones out there, but well hidden somethimes.

Hi All,

I am originally from Poland, where I have a gained a masters’degree in finance and accountancy. I’ve been living in UK over 4 years, working in various administration roles. As my English improved over the years, I’ve decided it was time to go back to my accountancy career. I’m about to start AAT Level 2 with Kaplan this year.

I’m really glad I’ve found this forum as it is very useful. It is great that there are people willing to share their experience.
