from an oldie who has just discovered this site and found it really useful

I qualified as ACMA 4 years ago at the ripe old age of 44 (you do the maths) and haven’t looked back

Started my own Accountancy and Business Management company earlier this year and have a large client who outsources all his finance and accounts function to me (actually, the last place I worked for and who I am still the FD of) as well as some smaller clients

and, like bluewednesday, I support the one team in Yorkshire

Hi and welcome to AS!

Not that side of forty yet, just finished my ACCA exams and working in life assurance tax for my sins. Are you from Yorkshire by any chance? If so, which part? I’m Scottish , married to a Yorkshireman (his parents are from the Keighley and Sutton areas - he was born in Germany as dad was stationed there at the time).

How’s your main client being affected / may be affected by the current conditions? And how are you finding being your own boss?

Apologies for all the questions, I’m naturally curious me!

Hi and welcome.  I have to say…  “The one team in Yorkshire?” that’s Leeds United isn’t it?

Thanks for the warm welcome from everyone

to answer the thousand questions asked by M-S, I was born and dragged up in Sheffield and now live in sunny Donny (it’s sunny when it’s not foggy anyway)

Main client is a haulage company and is seriously suffering the effects fuel increases, especially the new 2p per litre fuel duty (I know 21% corp tax is better than 17.5% VAT but cash flow is cash flow) and the strength of the Euro against sterling (lots of foreign subcontractors)is causing margin problems

Being my own boss?
FANTASTIC if slightly daunting

Oh, and Holty - you spell swearwords in print thus:  L**ds

Thanks for the info Skampydog. Being FD of a haulage company plus having other clients must be very challenging at the best of times, let alone just now. Not only with the effects you mention, but I believe there has also been an increase in foreign drivers being used in the UK to cut suppliers transport costs, no? And, AFAIK, the driving standards of many of them leaves much to be desired.

Looking forward to hearing more from you, and your invaluable input to this community.
