Planning to do last ACCA exam in June 2012.

My plan is to purchase books from Kaplan Publishing and home study starting from mid Feb with a gradual increase in the amount of hours nearer to the exam.

I know from experience P6 Advanced Taxation is a huge syllabus and more orientated towards the type of job I am currently employed but my employers are not particullarly bothered which exam I take (unless I wish to take up the option of CTA afterwards).

Is P5 Advanced performance management a smaller syllabus and an easier exam to just get out of the way and proceed to affiliate?

I just want to do the easiest option and get exams finished.

Anyone had a similar situation or experience with both these papers?

Thanks

Good afternoon all,

I have an oddly philosophical sounding query for you: when is obligation “present”?

I strongly suspect I am overthinking this, but it’s bothering me. Let me illustrate what I mean with an example.

Assume that a company has signed a contract in October 2007 to employ a consultant for a three-month period from January 2008 to March 2008.

If the company’s year-end was 30 March 2008, and the consultant had not been paid, his fees would have to be accrued and form a liability in the balance sheet. (ps: please tell me if I am wrong here)

Conversely, if the company’s year-end was 31 December 2007, and the consultant had been paid already, his fees would be a prepayment, and form an asset in the balance sheet. (ps: again, tell me if I’m wrong)

Now, here’s the bit I’m not so sure on. What if the year-end was 31 December 2007 and the consultant had not been paid? Does his fee go in the balance sheet as a liability?

Clearly, its an obligation as a result of past events, the resolution of which will result in the outflow of economic resources from the entity. But, at the year-end date, although the company knew it would incur the expenditure next year, the contract did not start until after the end of the financial year. Does that mean that the obligation was not truly “present” and so it cannot be recognised as a liability?

Do you see what I mean about over-thinking it?

Does anyone have good tips on how to study for P3? I am trying to read the Kaplan text first and will attempt questions later. I have problems concentrating though since my interest in the subject is very low and can only keep the book open for 5 minutes at a time maximum.

Situation is I’m studying the Northern Ireland equivalent of the British AAT qualification, will finish the academic bit in 2013, the work experience element, I’m hoping to be able to get that organised within the next few weeks and have that completed summer 2014. Back in October I applied for a loan to pay off my 2 storecards but got turned down, as a result of that I got a phone call a few weeks later from Churchwood Finance, initially asked for loan big enough to pay off the Next & Argos cards but didn’t get accepted but the lady I was talking to did say that they could provide me with a debt management plan which would not only take care of the storecards but other unsecured debts as well, impact is it has halved what my husband & I are paying towards paying off debts. A few days after signing all the paperwork, by chance (saw a link on facebook with headline that your status can cost you your job so read it to find out if potential employers could have issues with my facebook, that article had a link with headline about bad credit and working in Accountancy. I’ve spoken to my course tutor and she’s said that once my debts have been paid off, I won’t be able to be a registered acoountant for 12 years because although debts are usually clear after 7, debt management is 12 years. She did say that during the 12 years I can work as an Accounting Technician or a book keeper but I’m wondering if there’s any other jobs I could do? I do know from my tutor that I can do the Chartered Accountants qualification, my plan is that if I decide to go to that level that I’d either do it by asking my employer, if I get a job as Accounting Technician (can apply for trainee Accounting Technician posts while doing my course) or book keeper to contribute or pay the costs of me doing the course or to finance the qualification myself. If I do gain employment and then do the Chartered exams, could I do all the work but then the person with Chartered status double check it and then ‘sign it off’. If I’ve understood the rules correctly, the Chartered status allows you to effectively sign to say that the accounts which have been done are correct and accurate. If this wouldn’t be allowed, then I’d time it so that I gain the Chartered qualification a few months at the most before the 12 years is up. The timescale is that the debts will be paid off end of 2013 or possibly January 2014 so the 12 years before I can be a ‘fit & proper person’ will be end of 2025/January 2026. I have been doing some reading online about this and some people have said that when they’ve been told that they’re going to have their credit history checked, they’ve been honest, explained the situation and got the job. I’ve also read in one article where accountants haven’t appealed parking tickets even though the ticket shouldn’t have been given for fear that while appealing, their credit history would be affected and they’d lose their jobs. I’ll be grateful for any advice that people in the know can give me.

...smashing your ball bag between two bricks.

For heaven’s sake can’t the ACCA come up with a more user friendly system for recording your PER.

I’m trying to get two different people (one my current boss and one my previous boss) to sign off various different experiences I’ve gained while I’ve worked for them.

First I managed to add my current boss to a previous employer. This was obviously done in error. I wrote to the ACCA to try and delete my error but apparently this is not possible. All I can do is deactivate them.

Now I want to submit a piece of experience for the review of my old boss, but don’t appear to be able to do this as my current boss hasn’t reviewed / accepted / rejected the evidence I’ve submitted to her on the same performance objective.

It’s so user unfriendly. You’d think you’d be able to put in different answers to the challenge questions and the submit them to different mentors / managers based on a check box selection. This would allow wyou to demonstrate multiple situations where you’d shown the required competencies.

Has anyone else been driven to distraction by the TDM system or is it just me?
