i cant quite grasp this concept in the “real world”.
the worked examples in textbook i have come across emphasise working the p/l to gross profit and then calculating tax at the “30%” to figure out the net profit after tax

but how does this apply to the real world?

I.e. in corporation tax/self assessment you would have to meet HMRC strict guidelines when calculating the tax and you would usually submit this up to 9 months/12 months after your year end. The HMRC may disagree with your assessment and tax you more. How is this reflected in the accounting statements? I cant get my head around the timing and how the tax is calculated (the real way or the accounting way)

Am I a terrible person? Allow me to take you through my evening.

1700- go home from my boring data-entry temp job. This is my seventeenth week, and I’ve been wanting to get out for at least twelve. The agency I’m with tell me they’re looking, but there’s nothing around.

1745- get a call from an agency (not the one I’m working with) re a senior purchase ledger job in Stevenage. It sounds pretty good, ongoing temp, great company, decent pay in a nice part of town. The job’s mine if I want it, but only if I can start tomorrow. I try and negotiate starting a day later, don’t suceed but decide to go through with the new job anyway.

1800- the call to the existing agency to tell them I’m not going into work tomorrow (or ever again). They are not impressed, and tell me I’m being rude in leaving them like this. They have a point, but I tell them it’s just one of those unfortunate things: opportunities like this come rarely to me and I need to sieze it. I don’t officially have to give any notice period, and there’s nothing they can do or say to stop me.

1805- try to call my existing employer and explain it to them. No reply from the office.

1806- call the new agency to confirm recipt of the details for the new job, and I’ve told the old agency. Have an admin/payroll talk to get myself set up. (50% payrise! Of course income tax & NI will take a third or so of that, but still)

1825- get email from old agency. They got in contact with people from my (now) old employer. They feel (melodramatically but not too unreasonably) that I have let them personally and the company as a whole down. The way I’ve left, they say, is unprofessional and unacceptable and they’re all very disappointed.

I haven’t replied yet, although I’ll have to make contact to sort out P45, final payslips and such. I’m not proud of what I’ve done, but I think it was the right risk to take. I would have liked to give some notice to my previous employer, but I will not pass up this chance.

What are the consequences of this likely to be?

P2 is fairly okay because i can get my head down and do questions, taking tonnes of notes is just not my thing!!!

I work for an organisation which it is very likely will have a company, with a new name, forming soon. It will be formed by 3 partners breaking away and forming a new company with a new name.

I cannot quote names as it is confidential.

There are set up costs, such as for a web domain and a photographer for the company brochure / website.

One invoice has been sent to the existing company. No problem there. Can be paid and recovered from the new company when it is incorporated.

Another invoice has been addressed to the new company’s name. I have been told to pay from existing company and recover later.

Technically and legally it is incorrect, right?

Thoughts?

Just wanted to know if anyone out there has been involved in any insourcing of an accounts department.

The company I work for is currently paying a third party to do our accounting. They prepare our monthly management accounts, pay BACS payments for us, keep our accounting records on Sage and do payroll for us. We pay them just over £4,000 per month for this.

At the moment it is very quiet in our office. We are going through one of those periods.

I am thinking of suggesting to my superiors that we try and insource this and I would be responsible for all of this except for the payroll. We would keep the third party only for payroll and install the accounting system on my pc and possibly others and I would be responsible for collating all the information and preparing monthly management accounts.

Does anyone have any experience of this at any level and can give any suggestions or tell me anything that may have happened along the way. What are the potential pitfalls of something like this?

Does anyone know the annual cost for a business to have “Sage Accounting Package”?

Hi Everyone,

I am a tutor with The Richard Clarke Academy in Belfast (RCABelfast). I am using our youtube channel to post free 10 minute lectures using mind maps for each topic on the P7 syllabus over the next few months.

These will cover everything you need to know on P7 and are absolutely free.

The first four lectures went out last week and are still posted up on the channel. If you subscribe (free) to the channel at the link below it will tell you when a new lecture is posted or go to The Richard Clarke Academy Belfast on facebook and become a fan - the lectures will be posted here also and appear in your facebook newsfeed.

These won’t replace classroom based tuition, but will reinforce the topics to make exam revision more easy.
