What are the really powers of these professional institutes? Do they wait for the Ministry of Justice to take actions or do they have some special power through delegated legislation to take actions by their own first?

I did my A levels this summer but decided not to go to uni because I wanted to start work. I thought I could get a starting role in accountancy and study AAT alongside. Unfortunately that hasn’t quite worked out and I simply can’t find a job in accountancy as I haven’t got any experience, not even an entry level role. I’ve gone through loads of agencies and they haven’t been able to find me anything. I don’t think I could have picked a worse time to look for a job but when I stared the credit crunch wasn’t in its full swing. Now I think all firms are looking for highly specialized people with tons of experience so I really have no chance. That’s why I’ve decided to go to uni and do an accountancy course as I know there are loads of firms that take on graduates (just not A level school leavers). Anyway what I want to know is what would be the best/most relevant degree in accounting (because there are so many i.e accounting and bussines, accounting and economics etc.)that I could do if I want to go on to qualify as a chartered accountant? Any suggestions appreciated, Thanks.

I’ve been set an assignment in a particular area of management accounting; it’s about David Otley, contingency theories and their applications to the public sector. I’m to discuss other academic writing in public sector management accounting, with detailed analysis and comparison.

I happen to know that the lecturer’s own research is in this subject area; and she has written several journal articles published in Public Money and Management and others.

The question is: do I use the lecturer’s own work as the focus of my assignment?

How do you think she’d react? A careful, considered discussion of my lecturer’s ideas… I kind of like the idea of being given a carte blanche to be critical. Or even just flatter her ego. Is that what she’s after, do you think?

How about anyone else? Have you referred to your own lecturers in assignments?

Anybody who is smart can get a good grade in an accounting course if all they do is go to school. That means: no involvement on campus, no JOB, just straight up chillin’ and studying. But then take another smart person who is involved on their campus (whether it be sports, student goverment, or leadership positions in other orgs), has a 15-hour-a-week part-time job, is taking five courses, etc., and no, they will not be able to get the high scores the person with nothing to do but open a book will. What do you guys think? When working on your undergraduate degree, is it advisable to do nothing but school so that you can get that 4.0 in accounting, or is it better to be a more well-rounded student, and have a GPA ranging in the 3.3-3.6 for accounting. Opinions?
